But if you're Muslim, you might be wondering: Can I eat Takoyaki in Japan? Is it halal?
Takoyaki (たこ焼き) is a famous Japanese snack made from a batter filled with small pieces of octopus, green onions, and pickled ginger. It's cooked in a special pan that gives it a round shape. After cooking, it's usually topped with a savory brown sauce, mayonnaise, dried bonito flakes (katsuobushi かつお節), and seaweed (aonori 青のり).
The octopus and batter are usually okay, but the sauce can be a problem. Many Takoyaki sauces contain mirin (a sweet cooking wine) or other alcohol-based ingredients, which aren't halal.
So even though the main ingredients are generally halal, the sauce is what you need to check. Some places may offer Muslim-friendly sauces.
Tip: Always ask the staff if the sauce has alcohol or mirin. You can say: "このソースにみりんやお酒は入っていますか？" (Kono so-su ni mirin ya osake wa haitteimasu ka?) which means "Does this sauce contain mirin or alcohol?"

You can eat Takoyaki in Osaka as a Muslim, you just need to be a little careful about the sauce. As more halal and Muslim-friendly restaurants open in Japan, enjoying local foods like Takoyaki is becoming easier.
